EUROPEAN SYNCHROTON RADIATION FACILITY
INSTALLATION EUROPEENNE DE RAYONNEMENT SYNCHROTRON
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 19 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
Within the Experiments Division, the X-ray Imaging group is now seeking to recruit a:
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW (M/F)
for the X-Ray Microscopy beamline ID21 T H E F U N C T I O N
You will participate in research programmes, the operation of the instruments and providing support to external users as local contact.
In particular, you will be encouraged to develop your own , which should exploit the unique beamline capabilities (a brief description of the project will be appreciated). You will also join in the effort of the group to upgrade the performance of the experimental end-stations and to develop micro-analysis methodologies, based on X-rays and infrared.
ID21 is an undulator beamline devoted to high resolution micro-analysis and micro-spectroscopy. The beamline comprises two end-stations:
- a scanning X-ray microscope optimized for X-ray fluorescence and transmission micro-spectroscopy/imaging in the 2-7.2keV range;
- a synchrotron-based infrared microscope dedicated to FTIR microscopy and spectroscopy. Areas of interest involve the study of elemental distributions, chemical speciation and morphology of samples with sub-micron lateral resolution in fields of applications such as Biology, Geochemistry, Archeometry, or Environmental Sciences.

You must hold a degree or equivalent in physics, biology, chemistry or a related discipline. Previous experience in a synchrotron radiation related field such as X-ray spectroscopy techniques, X-ray imaging or/and other microscopy techniques is desirable. Aptitudes in X-ray instrumentation or in data analysis and modeling or in cryo-microscopy would be appreciated. Experience in vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR or Raman) will also be considered as an asset.
